Eczema is not a life-threatening condition, but it can cause untold discomfort. Severe itching can cause irritability and sleeplessness. The skin in the area is usually dry and rough, but the rashes may open up, oozing and forming ugly crusts.

I use coconut oil for my eczema and dry skin everyday. I have one jar for cooking, and one jar for my skin.

If you’re like most eczema sufferers who tend to have dry skin, coconut oil can be very beneficial for eczema since:

Coconut oil contains many of the compounds and properties that make it ideal for treating the skin. In coconut oil we find a number of important vitamins, minerals and nutrients that help to nourish and moisturise the skin. It is a rich source of vitamins K and E as well as healthy acids including lauric and capric acid. Its properties are antibacterial, antimicrobial, antifungal and antioxidant which are key to preventing infection and healing damaged skin.

Coconut oil reduces the inflammation and irritation characteristic of the condition. It helps heal tissue damage and supports immune system function.

The best news for eczema sufferers might be that it provides very quick relief from itching usually within 5 minutes of being applied.

The medium-chain fatty acids possessed by coconut oil are easily absorbed through the skin helping it to remain moisturised and soft and further reducing inflammation.

The lauric acid contained in coconut oil is a rare type of fatty acid found in mother’s milk which is converted into a compound called monolaurin. When applied topically it actually penetrates the skin, moisturising it from within and giving you protection against damaging free radicals.

How To Use Coconut Oil For Eczema

Using the oil is very easy – you can use it both externally and internally. For example, when using it externally, I usually apply the oil several times a day to dry skin or areas affected by the eczema. My eczema was really severe before.

You can also ingest the coconut oil internally. For example, you can add a spoon of coconut oil to your smoothie, or you can cook with it. Taking coconut oil internally, will give your body essential vitamins and fats to help fight infection, heal quicker, and reduce inflammation. I love taking coconut oil both internally and externally since it provides benefits both ways.

I highly recommend giving it a go!
